Women's life-changing symptoms can often be played down or dismissed

Talking about the menopause is something that has only become commonplace in recent years. Prior to this, that part of a woman's life wasn't openly discussed.

But years of the topic being kept under wraps means many unhelpful myths about the menopause still abound. And women's health expert Dr. Amanda Olson, President and Chief Clinical Officer at Intimate Rose, a company specialising in women's health products, is keen to dispel some of the untruths about both the menopause and women's other health concerns.

Dr Olson said: “Many women also experience shifts in their mood, trouble sleeping, weight gain, a new onset of vaginal pain, urinary incontinence, muscle soreness, and even memory fog. From clinical trials underrepresenting women until the 1990s, to heart disease still being known as a ‘man’s disease’ even though coronary heart disease kills more than twice as many women in the UK as breast cancer, she argued that healthcare has failed women in many ways.

She believes that debunking these harmful myths is key to improving their health literacy and encouraging them to seek the care they need. Other myths about women's health Dr Olson is keen to quash include the below. She said: “This gradual decline is why women often notice changes in their mood, sleep patterns, and even their memory. Instead of worrying about your body coming to a stop, instead think of it more like shifting gears. Your body’s production of hormones may be lower, but they’re still present and playing an important role.”
