Merseyside gardening guru Karen lets us in on her secret to a flourishing spring garden
Early spring is notoriously fickle, weather-wise. You never know if it's going to be sunny or raining, warm or cold. You can even be caught out with ground frost.
For those of us with vegetable patches, Karen has a few suggestions. She said: "The best veg to get started with is your broad beans. You can plant them straight into the ground at this time of year, or you can start them up in little top pots. You can also plant onions and garlic around this time as well."
Roses, she says, "should really have been pruned by now - before March 17, ideally, but you can still prune them. You can take them back by half, or about two feet from the ground - that's for ordinary bush and shrub roses." Karen says you should also be cutting back any old flowers from last year, and make sure you're cutting back the herbaceous plants in your borders.
