Social media provides no end of tips and tricks, but one expert says they're not all clever hacks

Spring cleaning season is upon us, and if you’re turning to TikTok to find some cleaning hacks, be wary that not all of them are as good as they may seem. To help navigate the countless spring cleaning tips online, experts at Victorian Plumbing have put some of TikTok’s most popular hacks to the test and advised on what not to do when it comes to cleaning your home.

Brenna Ryan, bathroom and kitchen expert at Victorian Plumbing warns of the TikTok hacks which don’t work and should be avoided during a spring clean.Brenna said: “Vinegar has become a go-to for cleaning in many homes, with online hacks praising the acidic liquid for its versatility in all areas of the house. Though it can work well for removing dirt and grime, it isn’t something you should use for all cleaning purposes when spring-cleaning your home.

“Social media users have often used banana peel as a way to polish wood and other shiny surfaces around the home. Though the fruit contains citric and salicylic acid which can be useful as a natural wax, the banana peel is fibrous and can leave behind unsightly smears and marks as well as sticky residue.”Brenna said: “Although lemons can work in some ways to help in cleaning the home, when removing stains from surfaces mixing lemon and bicarbonate of soda isn’t the best option.
