As the cost of living crisis shows no sign of abating, many people are looking for ways to save money and their cleaning routine could be an easy start

As energy bills continue to weigh heavily on households, even during the summer months, some experts are offering a glimmer of hope. They suggest that alternative cleaning methods could help families save a significant amount of money.

The specialists have listed several tips that not only promise to reduce energy bills but also save time, starting with the long-standing household task of defrosting the freezer. Although it's hardly anyone's preferred activity, the experts claim it could cut costs by as much as £200 annually. In a similar vein, giving your oven a thorough clean could lead to a 10% reduction in energy use. Considering it costs approximately 49p an hour to run, ovens are among the priciest home appliances.

In the kitchen, an expert has shared a third tip, emphasising the importance of cleaning your kettle to remove limescale, which can increase energy consumption by 7% even with as little as a millimetre of build-up. They advised: "Even in as small amounts as a millimetre, limescale can increase energy consumption by 7%."
