Gel manicure ready to come off? We asked the experts how to quickly, efficiently – and safely – remove your gel polish yourself at home, including top tips and useful tools

'How to remove gel polish at home' is one of the most Googled nail-related queries, and yes, the best results will come from getting your gel polish removed by a pro – but not everyone has time for this.

I recently qualified as a nail technician with popular gel polish brand Bio Sculpture but before this, removing my polish was one of my biggest bugbears with gel manicures. However, now – and with advise from other nail experts – I think I've nailed it. So whether it's a salon or a DIY gel manicure that's ready to come off, here’s how to quickly and safely do it at home .

How to remove gel polish at home Step 1: Buff Start by using a medium-grit nail file to buff away the top coat. Take time to do this thoroughly as it will help with the soak-off .Step 2: Soak Add a drop of cuticle oil to the nail , then soak a piece of cotton wool in acetone, place on the nail and wrap the fingertip in foil. “This creates a warm environment that helps the acetone work more efficiently,” says Thea Green, founder of Nails.INC.

If yours do need some recovery time, apply a treatment such as Bio Sculpture Ethos Vitamin Dose, £12, or Nails.INC Gimme Strength Restoring Nail Strengthener, £9, as well as regular cuticle oil.
