This development aims to promote waste reduction, encouraging researchers to find an eco-conscious method to upcycle and recycle wood-waste.
The ink is customizable, allowing users to maximize creativity while making 3D-printed wooden structures.
“Wood can be deconstructed into lignin and cellulose nanomaterials – building blocks that imbue natural wood with its rigidity and mechanical strength,” researchers noted.Lignin and cellulose nanomaterials make up the fundamental elements known to enhance strength and rigidity in wood.
However, they noted that additional adjustments needed to be made to improve the strength of the 3D-printed wooden structures and also to make the material more sustainable “while minimizing energy-intensive processes such as freeze-drying and hot-pressing,” added the scientists.
