A new report highlights alarming air pollution levels in Manchester, with experts calling on the government to take more stringent measures. Charity Asthma & Lung UK staged protests in major cities to raise awareness about the impact of air pollution on children and demanded stricter targets.

Experts have urged the government to take tougher action on air pollution , with new figures showing Manchester 's pollution levels hugely exceed accepted limits.

That’s really important, especially in cities like Manchester, which is quite car dominated.”

A study by the UK Health Security Agency also found that air pollution contributes to up to 43,000 premature deaths a year, a figure estimated at 1,200 for Greater Manchester alone. Straddling the A6, one of the busiest routes into Manchester City Centre, Ardwick has long been impacted by traffic and air pollution. Children and staff at Co-op Academy Medlock, across the road from Ardwick Green Park, staged a walk-out in July to protest the lack of pedestrian crossings over the A6, which they said pushed many parents to drive to school instead of walking.

“We wouldn’t expect or allow children to drink dirty water. So why are we forcing them to breathe dirty air?”
