Used daily in households across the UK, the common kitchen sponge might seem like an unimposing cleaning tool, but the truth is, it's actually harnessing plenty of nasties

Despite being an essential tool for cleaning, your kitchen sponge could be harbouring various harmful bacteria and pathogens if not properly maintained. A kitchen and bathroom expert at Plumbworld has revealed the hidden dangers associated with kitchen sponges - and why they could even be making you ill.

By understanding these hidden dangers and implementing proper maintenance and hygiene practices, you can significantly reduce the risk of illness associated with kitchen sponges.Kitchen sponges are moist and porous, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. The structure of a sponge, with its many nooks and crannies, provides ample hiding spots for bacteria.

“Using natural disinfectants like white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide can be a cost-effective way to keep your kitchen sponges clean. Soaking sponges in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water for a few minutes can help reduce bacterial growth. Similarly, a quick soak in hydrogen peroxide can also sanitise sponges effectively. These household items are often cheaper than commercial disinfectants and can be just as effective in maintaining hygiene," says the expert.

"Plus, they can often be cleaned more thoroughly in the dishwasher. By choosing tools that are easier to sanitise and last longer, you can cut down on the need for frequent sponge replacements and maintain a healthier kitchen environment.”
