AFL: The Crows will receive pick 19 as compensation, following Tom Doedee's decision to join the Brisbane Lions via free agency.
A bigger-than-usual jump in the salary cap is behind the hefty compensation draft picks handed out to AFL clubs so far in the 2023 trade period.
Players are then ranked in bands, with the top five per cent of players warranting a first-round compensation pick, while the bottom 30 per cent get no compensation at all. If he was a free agent in 2024, he would have needed to be paid over $900,000 a year to sit in the top five per cent of contracts.
“That sucks money out of the total player payments away from older players. So the value of salary that sits within the 25-and-plus-year cohort is lower on a relative basis. Which means the nominal value of a contract relative to that cohort is different over time.”
