As Extinction Rebellion and other environmental groups begin four days of protests, a minister has warned activists against breaking the law.
"But Britain is one of the countries and this government is one of the governments that is leading the fight against climate change." Their early protests included blocking major bridges across the Thames, planting trees in Parliament Square and activists super-gluing themselves to the gates of Buckingham Palace.
It admitted"very little has changed" as a result of the tactics used over the past five years, which have also included oil terminal blockades to disrupt fuel supplies.Spectators have been urged to avoid a famous part of the London Marathon route on Sunday in the midst of a planned protest, as a minister said Extinction Rebellion "must be stopped".
In a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Shapps wrote:"The London Marathon is one of the UK's biggest charity fundraisers. In talks with the race organisers, Extinction Rebellion agreed it would be"uniquely asking all their participants to help guard the London Marathon", Hugh Brasher, its director, said."I hope Just Stop Oil and the other organisations listen to what we are saying."
