Three out of four people with a visual impairment are aged over 65 with around 8,000 people of working age registered blind or partially sighted

An estimated two million individuals across Great Britain are grappling with vision problems or degenerative eye diseases. Over 59,000 adults under the age of 65 are receiving additional financial aid through Personal Independence Payment or Adult Disability Payment in Scotland, while 48,695 people above the State Pension age are receiving weekly assistance through Attendance Allowance.

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free benefit administered by the Department for Work and Pensions . It currently provides extra financial support to nearly 1.6 million people across Great Britain. If you, or someone you know, under State Pension age has a sight condition, it may be worth considering making a new claim for PIP or ADP - find out more here.

What is Attendance Allowance? Attendance Allowance is a benefit designed to help with additional costs if you have a physical or mental disability or illness severe enough that makes it hard for you to look after yourself - it does not cover mobility needs. You do not need to have someone caring for you in order to claim.

Even if you have savings and other income, you can still claim the Attendance Allowance. It's not means-tested, so your other financial resources don't affect your eligibility. Receiving Attendance Allowance may increase your other benefits. These could include Extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit Reduction, and Council Tax Reduction. How to make a claim To make a claim, you'll need to fill out a lengthy claim form. While this might seem intimidating, assistance is available from your local Citizens Advice.
