Calls are growing for an extra bank holiday in 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. VE Day, which marks the end of the Second World War in Europe, falls on 8 May each year. Rumors suggest an additional bank holiday would be added to the calendar, resulting in schools and offices being closed for an extra day. A poll by The Mirror found that 73% of people support having a special day to remember the sacrifices made, while only 13% oppose the idea.
On the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020, the early May Bank holiday was moved from 4 to 8 May to mark the occasion. Experts have predicted a possible extra holiday in 2025 to commemorate either VE Day or VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day). However, the government has not yet confirmed this. A government spokesperson told Manchester Evening News: ‘The 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day will be moments of huge significance for our country, and the government is committed to commemorating the occasions appropriately. That is why we have announced more than £10 million for events. We will announce the Government’s plans to mark the occasion shortly.’ If confirmed, the extra bank holiday could fall on Friday 9 or Monday 12 May, the dates closest to VE Day. Another possibility is Friday August 22, coinciding with the bank holiday on Monday August 25 for a four-day weekend
