for five years, with the number of cases reaching “extraordinary” levels, according to official figures.showed that 24.9 cases of flu per 100,000 people were recorded in the week ending on Sunday.
This is the highest incidence rate observed in Scotland since the final week of 2017, and is high enough to be termed “extraordinary” by the public health agency. Officials are advising people to stock up on paracetamol, ibuprofen and suitable alternatives for children so they do not run out over the Christmas period.
They are also recommending that people with underlying health conditions ensure they have enough prescription medicines so they do not run out, leaving themselves more vulnerable. The PHS data showed that in the week ending 18 December, there were 1,358 confirmed flu cases across Scotland, up from 423 in the week ending 4 December.
