The couple (stock photo not relating to the case), who were in their 80s, were contacted by someone claiming to be a detective who said they had arrested someone in possession of bank cards.

An 'extremely sophisticated' fraudster has conned an elderly couple out of £350,000 by pretending to be a Met police detective.

In an attempt to verify their police credentials, the fraudster told the victims to call the police directly to confirm the details, but stayed on the line so the phone reconnected to them. Police today warned residents that neither police forces or banks will 'ever' call them requesting they withdraw money or buy goods. Pictured: Stock photo

The victims also received additional calls, pretending to be from their bank, to further legitimise the crime - which saw them lose £350,000 in total.
