The held promise after an action-packed sprint. But after hectic formation and opening laps that knocked out three drivers and knocked the two Australians a lap down, the race turned rather quiet. Max Verstappen cruised to another easy win with Lando Norris a few seconds behind the Dutchman. They ended up in a race of their own, similar to the sprint, with Fernando Alonso a distant 25.

“I had a terrible start, ended up losing a place to George and another place to Lewis into Turn 4,” Pérez explained. “From then on I was fighting, I had to use a lot of my tires, and then I think I paid the price towards the end.” The Red Bull driver lined up ninth for Sunday’s grand prix and stayed ahead of the carnage that unfolded with the four drivers directly behind him. He navigated his way to a seventh-place spot for the restart and set off to climb up the grid from there.
