“It’s a huge amount of money,” Charles Leclerc said. “I have no idea about what deserves a one million dollar penalty.'

AUSTIN, TX — Formula One drivers have questioned the FIA’s decision to introduce a new maximum fine of €1 million , calling it “obscene” and questioning where the money goes. The latest FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meeting took place in Geneva this week, discussing matters such as F1 power unit rules for 2026, tire testing allowances and calendars for championships including Formula E and the World Rally Championship.

“The first two, three or four years of being a Formula One driver, the salaries are nothing like what people actually think they are,” he said. Albon also pointed out drivers already have to pay a fee for the Super License required to race in F1. This costs $11,000 plus $2,200 per point scored. Verstappen’s fee for the 454 points he scored in 2022 would have totaled $1,009,000 — simply for the privilege of competing. As the FIA is a non-profit, this money goes back into funding the organization.
