Motorsport governing body the FIA is set to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday in which it will discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and decide the future of Russian drivers including Formula 1’s Nikita Mazepin.

On Monday the head of the Automobile Federation of Ukraine, Leonid Kostyuchenko, sent a letter to the FIA demanding that it strip all Russian drivers of their licence to participate in FIA organised events, alongside other sanction requests designed to render Russians pariahs in motorsport.

Now the FIA must weigh up whether to agree to the request from the IOC and Kostyuchenko to banish Russian competitors, which would bar Mazepin from taking part in the 2022 season with American-owned outfit Haas. Team principal Gunther Steiner has admitted that the future of Mazepin, who is widely considered the worst driver on the Formula 1 grid having endured an embarrassing rookie season in which he was plagued by spins, slow pace and an accusation of groping a woman in a video posted online, needs to be ‘resolved.’

Mazepin’s father Dmitry is an oligarch with close links to Putin and attended a one-to-one meeting with the president on the same day he launched a violent assault onThe elder Mazepin is owner and chairman of Russian fertiliser giant Uralchem, whose brand Ural Kali served as title sponsor of the American-owned Haas team from the beginning of 2021 before the arrangement was suspended last week.
