FA Cup second round: League Two club Harrogate Town host non-league side Gainsborough Trinity As we just mentioned, Gainsborough Trinity pulled off an astonishing comeback away at Hednesford Town in the first round to set up their tie with Harrogate.It’s been 72 years since Gainsborough made it this far in the FA Cup. Their last second-round tie ended in a 2-1 defeat by Newport County in 1952.
Trinity have already had to win five ties to reach this stage after beginning a marathon journey back on 31 August in the first qualifying round. Tonight will be their seventh game in the competition after requiring a replay to beat Boston United in the fourth qualifying round.The game then ended 4-4 after extra-time before Trinity won 5-4 on penalties.The Sulphurites have only ever made it to the the third round once before in their history - and that was in 2022
Simon Weaver's side will be strong favourites for victory tonight over a team three tiers and 73 places below them, and have won all three of their previous matches in this competition against non-league opponents.It's the kind of magic we all want to see as Northern Premier League Gainsborough Trinity aim to upset League Two Harrogate Town.
They are one of only nine non-league sides still in the FA Cup, and one of just three from the seventh-tier, along with Kettering Town and Harborough Town.This is the stage of the competition where things really start to get serious, particularly for non-league clubs such as Gainsborough Trinity.Regardless of the outcome tonight, a slice of history will be made as whoever progresses will be equalling their best-ever run in this famous old competition.
