Bad weather has caused disruptions to the FA Cup third round, with two matches postponed due to frozen pitches.
The FA Cup third round is usually a highlight of the English football calendar, but bad weather is causing problems. While teams with better facilities than Goodison Park have managed to overcome the cold, others have not been as fortunate. Storm Darragh caused disruption for FA Cup second-round matches in early December, and the frosty conditions in 2025 have continued. So far, two third-round games have been postponed due to frozen pitches .
An all-League One tie between Mansfield and Wigan, scheduled for Saturday evening, and a match between Charlton and Preston, a Championship side, have both been called off. Mansfield stated that frost covers have been on the pitch all week to protect it, but with temperatures reaching -7C and not expected to rise above freezing for 24 hours, the game was postponed. Preston also reported that the pitch was deemed unplayable after an inspection by the match referee. Despite efforts by the grounds staff to prepare the pitch, sub-zero temperatures throughout the week and overnight on Thursday left it frozen. Due to similar conditions expected on Friday evening and Saturday morning, the decision was made early to avoid travel disruption for supporters, players, and staff
