A Texas woman is being sued by the FAA for a record fine of nearly $82,000.
FILE - An American Airlines jetliner waits on a runway for departure from Denver International Airport Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Denver. The lawsuit comes three years after Heather Wells was duct-taped to her airplane seat by the flight crew. So, why is she the one being sued and why such a steep fine?
"There's been so many of these cases recently about people just kind of going berserk on planes," attorney Tim Maloney said. They need to make that example to people saying there are going to be serious federal repercussions, financially and penal that's going to put you in jail, and you're going to get fined for that type of behavior," Maloney said.
Since 2021 the FAA has issued at least $5,000,000 of fines annually. Wells' fine is broken into three categories.
