BREAKING: Face coverings to be made compulsory in shops in England from next week
Wearing face coverings in English shops and supermarkets will be made mandatory next week, No 10 has announced.
From July 24, any customers who do not comply with the new rule could face a fine of up to £100. Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to make a full statement on the fresh legislation on Tuesday. A Downing Street spokesman said on Monday: ‘There is growing evidence that wearing a face covering in an enclosed space helps protect individuals and those around them from coronavirus. The Prime Minister has been clear that people should be wearing face coverings in shops and we will make this mandatory from July 24.’The move will bring England into line with Scotland, where face coverings were made mandatory in shops a week ago.
Children under 11 and those with certain disabilities will be exempt, similar to the rules applying to public transport. The move comes after days of confusion over whether ministers would implement the measure in a bid to slow the spread of the virus, after Boris Johnson said they were looking at ‘stricter rules’.Michael Gove said on Sunday he did not believe they should be mandatoryThe government’s message seemed to be further muddled this morning when Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said he would ‘perhaps’ support making them mandatory in public.
