As the new school year begins, school districts across the country are grappling with a severe teacher shortage.

Education experts point to a combination of national trends and issues specific to Florida as the cause. Pay is a significant factor—The shortage is also exacerbated by the supply and demand imbalance. There are not enough new teachers coming out of college to fill the growing number of empty positions. Florida is not alone in this crisis—National Center for Education Statistics data shows that 86% of U.S. K-12 public schools had trouble hiring teachers for the 2023-24 school year.in 2023.
Education experts cite poor working conditions and low salaries as key contributing factors to the teacher shortage. Teacher shortages have been a long-standing issue in schools, even before the pandemic. The problem has been particularly pronounced among English learners, children of color, and children with disabilities.
