It was that feeling of grief that I didn’t anticipate either,” she said.

“Doctors and clinics can ask some really simple questions: how is your mood? How are your anxiety levels? How are you feeling about going through treatment? That can sometimes bring things out that might not have come out otherwise,” she said, adding that she thinks counselling should be “woven in from the start” in all cases.

After a struggle, Carla’s husband managed to access treatment for a varicocele embolism operation. Six months later, his semen analysis was classed as normal. “10 years of wasted time,” she said, “and if we were given the correct support at the start, I would have been younger and there is a possibility that I could have fallen pregnant naturally.”

“Through pregnancy I started to feel PTSD thoughts coming back, so I ended up under the care of maternal mental health, and I had issues with bonding; I never thought I would have a live baby.” However, she said that she has received “invaluable” support from the Fertility Network and wishes she had known that such support was available sooner. Her husband has also attended male support meetings, which “helped him realise he wasn’t the only man going through it.
