Vaccination rates have decreased since the Covid-19 pandemic, nurse says.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Keeping up-to-date on the expanding routine of recommended childhood vaccines can seem tricky, but the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center is doing its part to help.

“We have seen decreased rates of vaccinations in the past couple of years since the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Nurse Jenna Hibdon with the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center, “and we’re really hoping to improve rates of vaccination by getting out there and explaining why vaccines are important in preventing infectious disease from spreading in our community.”

Along with her coworkers, Hibdon heads out to North Pole every third Thursday of the month to offer a community immunization clinic. At these clinics, she says, all childhood and adolescent immunizations are provided at a low to no cost. No one will be turned away for the inability to pay. “Now is a good time to be thinking about the back-to-school childhood vaccines, getting up to date before the first day of school,” said Joanne Spears, a nurse with the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center. “We will be providing all of the recommended vaccines, and all required vaccines for school.”

These needed vaccines change between different grades, such as varicella shots in kindergarten and meningitis shots in high school. TheIf you are not able to attend the clinic and you or your family still need immunizations, stop by the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center at 1025 Barnette Street, or give them a call at 452-1776.
