Dozens of people congregated at the Carlson Center for the annual fundraiser, the Fairbanks Heart Walk to fight heart disease and strokes.
“Getting Fairbanks out and walking is so important,” emphasized Kristin George, the executive director of the American Heart Association for Alaska. “We’re coming out of winter, and getting out on such a beautiful day and walking is one of the things that energizes us. We know there are studies where it invigorates us and makes our hearts healthier.”
The walk was preceded by warm-up activities including exercises and singing the national anthem. Events sponsors handed out healthy snacks and drinks, and attendees had the opportunity to try their hand at CPR or chalk drawings. “We’re so happy that so many have come out to support the cause,” George added. “We’ve seen coworkers, we’ve seen families joining together to support their heart health and be part of the community.”
The association says the funds raised by the walk will go towards cardiovascular research and improving standards of care in hospitals.
