Passover is the Jewish festival remembering the Isrealites’ Exodus from Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. It’s a celebration of freedom with family and friends that lasts seven, and sometimes eight, days.Caruso, wearing a blue ribbon on his lapel signifying the 133 Israelis still being held captive by Hamas, introduced guests to many of the customs of Passover during an introductory Q&A.
“This year has been an interesting year to have Seder, and particularly thinking about ‘Let My People Go’ when there are still 133 hostages,” Caruso said, referencing the song often sung during Passover. “Many Jews this year had an open seat at Seder for the hostages, in remembrance of them. So, in some ways the Passover Seder was a somber time at moments, but we tried to find joy even in that time.”
The word Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, refers to the Biblical story of the 10th plague of Egypt, where an angel of death was to kill the firstborn son of every family in Egypt. The Lord commanded the Jewish people to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorposts with the blood so the angel would “pass over” those homes on the eve of their Exodus. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
