Key faith leaders back a compromise in the debate as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hints at a deal with the Greens to break the impasse on protections for LGBTQ children.

Key faith leaders are backing a compromise on religious freedom after days of angry dispute over a proposal to limit the right of religious schools to dismiss teachers and expel students on questions of sexuality or gender identity.

The Australian Sikh Association praised the government for finding the “right balance” in the debate, while the Australian National Imams Council also backed an outcome that set ideology aside in pursuit of a workable compromise. In an important intervention after days of angry criticism from some faith groups, Wertheim lamented the polarisation of the argument and acknowledged there were valid points on both sides of the debate.

On that basis, he said, the Sex Discrimination Act could be amended to remove the exemption for religious schools under Section 38 of the law.
