People who solely rely on benefits and those working who use them to top up their income still do not know to what extent they will increase amid the rising cost of living
Laura, a 33-year-old carer from West Sussex, who is raising her two half siblings, said: “I’ve survived on food banks, school food vouchers and family help. I don’t have any spare money – it all goes on gas and electricity bills which have gone up from £91 to £200 per month.
“I was told I had to give up my job and claim benefits to look after my half-siblings. Everything has gone up in price – food, energy, everything, so if my benefits don’t go up with inflation how am I supposed to look after my children?” Ms Peake added: “The vast majority of calls to our advice line are carers worried about their finances amid soaring costs. If benefits do not rise in line with inflation, that would cause even more significant financial hardship for thousands of kinship families. The Government must not allow that to happen.”
