Native title holders have gathered on the banks of the Plenty River in Central Australia for a historic Federal Court decision, which will ensure they can keep culture and tradition alive on their land for generations to come.
Families from the four clan groups of the land at Huckitta Station , 270 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs , have been granted the strongest form of native title .
Justice Halley is about to make history, by delivering a significant decision for the native title holders of Huckitta Station, 270 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs.It means native title holders will be able to possess, use and enjoy this vast swathe of rich desert land – almost 1,700 square kilometres – to the exclusion of all others."We're so happy and proud," she says.
Since purchasing the pastoral lease in 2010, native title holders have already enjoyed a range of rights, including the ability to hunt, gather and conduct ceremonies on the land.
