Hundreds of students and university staff attended the vigil at the University of Nottingham as respects were paid to Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley Kumar and Ian Coates

Families of the victims of the Nottingham attacks said that 'time had stood still' in the year since the devastating events 12 months ago during a touching memorial at the University of Nottingham. Hundreds of students and university staff attended the memorial at Djanogly Terrace, which started at around 12am and was powerfully addressed by relatives of the former UoN students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley Kumar.

David Webber and Dr Sanjoy Kumar, the respective fathers of Barnaby and Grace, took to the stage to thank those who had turned up to share in their grief, but also to pledge to continue to push for accountability over the three killings. “A year ago today we stood in front of you absolutely shell shocked. When a tragedy like ours happens, time stands still,” Dr Kumar said.“Grace was so incredibly happy here. She loved Nottingham and everything it represented.

Dr Kumar called Valdo Calocane a coward and reiterated the families' belief that public authorities had missed opportunities to stop the violent paranoid schizophrenic. He added “today is a day of promise”, saying students must promise to uphold the friendship and inclusion his daughter had embodied, while the families promised to “assemble a formidable legal team to hold institutions to account” and demand a public inquiry.

Mr Webber, who said he had been wearing sunglasses to hide his tears during the incredibly difficult day, added: “I don’t really have many words I think I have said them all. You are all incredible, this university is what Barnaby loved. He was only back here for one last social with his cricket buddies and he didn’t even make that.
