A family narrowly escaped their burning home on New Year's Day after a stray firework ignited their shed, causing a devastating blaze that also damaged a neighboring property.
A couple told of their terrifying escape after a blaze sparked by a stray firework destroyed their home early on New Year 's Day. A neighbouring property was also badly damaged in the blaze which caused Richard and Karolyn Ward to flee in their pyjamas with daughter Mollie, aged ten, after the fire spread from their shed.
The Wards said they had been watching the New Year countdown on television - daughter Mollie, aged ten tucked up in bed – when they became aware of fireworks being set off nearby. After heading upstairs, the couple continued watching the local pyrotechnic display through their bedroom window – then noticed smoke coming from the shed. Mrs Ward, 39, said: 'As we got into bed we had the blind open to be able to see the local fireworks and after it had gone a bit quiet I saw smoke coming from our shed. 'I asked Richard if the shed was smoking or if it was the atmosphere from the fireworks. 'He jumped out of bed, went downstairs and saw flames shooting out of the shed and screamed to us to get out of the front window.' The flames quickly spread to the downstairs of their home, before then engulfing the neighbouring property owned by Jayden Nightingale, who was away at the time. Richard and Karolyn Ward and their 10-year-old daughter were unharmed after escaping from the burning property on New Year's Eve.
