Adey Adetoro and her niece were told 'to leave the UK' by a drunk man in Worksop
A victim of hate crime has spoken out after she and her niece were racially abused in a Nottinghamshire town by a drunk man. Adey Adetoro, originally from Nigeria but who has lived in Retford since 2008, and her niece, who is in the UK studying for a master's degree, were visiting Worksop in spring when they were subjected to the abusive comments.
"I don’t think I’ve experienced this type of hatred from anyone." Days after reporting the events to the police, the man was called in for questioning and the two women were asked how they wanted to proceed. "I need to educate him and say 'listen, get out of your shell'. I’m originally from Nigeria and when people come to our country we really appreciate it. We treat them like kings and queens. We want to make you have a good experience. That’s what we also expect from here."
Adey said: "My niece said she feels safer with Restorative Nottinghamshire’s involvement, the police’s involvement, and she feels relieved. I really felt much better meeting him again one-on-one. It felt he was sincere, and I felt it was honest. Aisha Edwards, a practitioner from Restorative Nottinghamshire, said restorative justice plays a powerful role in helping people to recover from the impact of crime. She explained: "Restorative justice gives a voice to people and helps them feel empowered.
"I want to be really clear that there is no place for hate in Nottinghamshire, which I consider to be a welcoming and tolerant county. I would encourage anyone affected by hate crime to report it. We know many people don’t – but I think Adey’s story shows that if you do come forward you can be confident that you will be looked after and given the support you need."
