The family of a Chinese tourist who was fatally hit by a car in Adelaide’s southwest has forgiven his killer, as a judge decided the driver should not be jailed. Nengguang Wen, 64, was on a trip to Australia to visit his daughter and grandchildren when he was struck by a car in Edwardstown on February 5, 2023. Jagmeet Singh, 32, ran a traffic light seven seconds after it had turned red, the District Court heard on Monday.

Press said Singh was not speeding, drinking or on drugs at the time, but was critical of the 32-year-old’s decision to drive with a medical condition. He will be banned from driving for ten years from the day of his release on parole. The court heard he had written a letter of apology to the victim’s family. “You decided to put your convenience above the safety of other road users,” Press said. “You were prepared to put others at risk because it suited you to do so.
