Washington State Patrol troopers respond to a deadly crash at the intersection of Alexander Avenue and State Route 509 in Tacoma on Sunday, July 16, 2023. Six people were killed and three others were injured in the crash. , claiming negligence for failure to take steps to make the intersection safer before six people were killed and others injured at State Route 509 and Alexander Avenue East.
Attorneys argue the Alexander Avenue intersection “posed a foreseeable hazard which defendants could have, yet chose not to, mitigate,” including excessive speed limits, insufficient signage and poor road design. They argue that failure led one of the vehicles to run the red light, which in turn killed 19-year-old Cerra Corner.
From January 2018 through December 2022, there were 99 reported crashes on this stretch of SR 509. Thirty-five of those involved a driver who disregarded the traffic sign or stop light, the lawsuit states.
