The family members of 13-year-old Eli Mitchell were joined by Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill in a ceremonial bill signing of H.B. 273.
Members of the DA's office helped draft and support the bill, which calls for harsher punishments for individuals charged with second-degree felony automobile homicide. Eli was killed on April 26, 2022, when he was walking his bike across a West Jordan crosswalk and was struck by a drunk driver.West Jordan street sign renamed to honor teen killed by drunk driver"In an act of sheer disregard, the driver stopped only to remove Eli’s bicycle from beneath his car and then sped away," a spokesperson for the DA's office stated. "This act left both Eli’s family and the entire West Jordan community in shock.
The driver, later identified as Mason Ohms, was tried and is now serving a 1 to 20-year sentence at the Utah State Correctional Facility.“Eli Mitchell had his entire life ahead of him, but it was tragically cut short by someone’s selfish actions. Those who drink and drive will find no quarter from our office. While Eli may no longer be with us, his legacy and impact remain. We are grateful for the strength and courage of the Mitchell Family,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill.
