A family of three that has been trapped living in squalid conditions for five years has been moved to new accommodation after i contacted the council
. Since moving into the flat, she said she started throwing up in the middle of the night and resorted to wearing a mask to sleep during winter, when the mould was at its worst. It comes as the death of, a two-year-old boy from Rochdale, has shone a spotlight on the squalid conditions many British families, in both local authority and privately rented accommodation, are forced to live in.
The Dakroub family has been living in temporary accommodation within the Hammersmith and Fulham Borough in London for the past ten years as they wait for a social housing property to become available. Councils often lease flats from private sector landlords to provide temporary accommodation to families who would otherwise be homeless. There are currently around 3,000 families on the council’s waiting list, meaning many families are left living in temporary housing for years.
“Since we moved in it has been non-stop. It started as little specks and now it’s in every single room and it’s so bad. It is horrendous,” she said. Earlier this year, the council informed them that it would be terminating its lease with the landlord due to the poor condition of the property, however, the family were left in limbo for months as they were not offered other accommodation that was suitable for them.
