A family's annual tradition of counting Quality Street chocolates has revealed a concerning trend: fewer chocolates and a shrinking variety of flavors over the past 18 years.
Chocolate tubs are arguably an essential part of Christmas and New Year celebrations in the UK – and we’re all often left fighting with our loved ones over the most popular flavours. But this year, one family has taken it to the next level and released an eighteen-year rundown of their yearly Quality Street purchase – and in the process, have documented a gradual decline in both numbers and flavours.
Every year since 2006, Penny Melson and her family have counted out just how many Quality Streets they’ve received in a packet, as well as each flavour. And, shockingly, the numbers have decreased from 137 to 67 in just under 20 years, as per their calculations. ‘Extremely niche but my family count Quality Street every year and we have it written down since 2006 how many were in each tin compared to today,’ @pennymay98’s post as part of a TikTok carousel read, sharing various handwritten notes depicting a breakdown of the types and number of chocolates they’ve indulged in each year. Chocolate is a classic part of Christmas and New Year celebrations . ‘This lil tradition is actually very fun, no hate Quality Street,’ Penny added. The first year, the Orange Chocolate Crunch flavour reigned supreme with 22 features, and the Vanilla Fudge didn’t do too badly at 17. But fast forward to 2024, and the family were treated to just four and eight respectively. Elsewhere, in 2006 they counted 8 Strawberry Dreams, 6 Purple Ones, 6 Orange Cremes, and 12 Malt Toffees. It was good news for strawberry fans, as these stayed at 8, but the remaining flavours decreased to five, seven, and eight respectively. In the comments section, her followers joked that she was doing the public a service, as @bfletcherskid lauded it as ‘stellar…the heart of primary research’
