A British family won a three-bedroom house in the Sicilian town of Sambuca di Sicilia for a mere €5,000, joining a wave of individuals revitalizing the historic town. The Mosleys, despite not visiting the property beforehand, were drawn by the town's charm and its efforts to attract new residents through low-cost home auctions. They plan to renovate the house while preserving its traditional features and are excited to spend holidays in their new Sicilian home.
The Mosley family, with two young children aged four and seven, embarked on an exciting journey to own a piece of Sicily . They were drawn to the charming town of Sambuca di Sicilia, known for its efforts to revitalize its historical center through property auctions. Local authorities have been selling abandoned homes for as little as €1 or €2 since 2019, attracting new residents and businesses.
The Mosleys, unable to visit the town in person, placed a bid of €5,000 on a three-bedroom house in the Saracen district through a sealed bid auction. Their research included town hall website details and photographs, along with extensive online investigation of the area.To secure the property, bidders must provide a €5,000 guarantee, refundable upon completion of renovations within three years. Failure to meet this requirement results in forfeiture of both the deposit and the property. The family finally visited Sambuca in January, signing a preliminary contract and solidifying their plan to transform the 70-square-meter house. The renovation project, while modest in scope, promises to be a family affair. Mrs. Mosley, a tech worker, plans to take a tiling course, allowing her to contribute to the project hands-on. The couple aims to preserve the house's original charm by keeping the front door, floors, tiles, staircases, and overall layout intact. The main renovation focuses on reconfiguring bathrooms into a kitchen and a new bathroom suite, repairing the roof, and replastering the exterior walls. They envision a traditional white render for the front facade, completing the classic Sicilian aesthetic. The Mosleys are excited about the prospect of living in Sambuca, drawn to its proximity to nature reserves, pristine beaches, local markets, ice-cream parlours, delicious cuisine, and nearby vineyards. They anticipate spending many holidays in their new Sicilian home, immersing themselves in the culture and pace of life. Their daughter, now learning Italian, is equally eager to embrace this new chapter in their lives
