Leeds United's Archie Gray will join up with England Under-19s this week
Daniel Farke has his fingers crossed that Archie Gray returns from international duty unscathed after being called up to represent England Under-19s this week. The 17-year-old will be looking to collect his first caps at U19 level as Simon Rusk’s Three Lions travel to Podgorica in Montenegro to play three UEFA European U19 Championships qualifying games.
As such, in an ideal world, the manager would be taking the international break as an opportunity to give Gray a rest ahead of a crucial run of Championship games leading into the winter months. However, he has begrudgingly allowed the teenager to link up with his national team this week in the hope that he returns to Thorp Arch in good condition and ready to help the Whites kick on into the next phase of the season.
“Yes, he will go away,” Farke said after seeing Gray turn in a man of the match worthy performance at right-back for United against Bristol City on Saturday. “If I'm honest, I would love to put him into cotton wool, but we also have to respect that there are sometimes also bigger, bigger ambitions and we can't hide him right now each and every time.
“So we have to wait a bit and calm everything down but he will definitely go away. Hopefully he doesn't have to play all three games I think it is this time around. Yes, but we'll see, so hopefully he comes back without an injury.
