Archie Gray will report back to Leeds United after playing three full matches for England's under-19s when Daniel Farke had hoped that would not be the case
International caps were always going to be in Archie Gray’s future and Daniel Farke knew he could not stand in the Leeds United midfielder's way for a second successive time this month. The manager’s one hope was the 17-year-old might not be used by Simon Rusk for all three of England’s under-19 fixtures.
“So we have to wait a bit and calm everything down, but he will definitely go away,” said Farke. “Hopefully, he doesn't have to play all three games this time around. “Yes, but we'll see so hopefully he comes back without an injury, but the good thing is with him he's blessed with a good body and also has good endurance and hopefully it's also beneficial.”Not only did Gray start all three matches in Montenegro, but he finished them too. That means, across a 13-day period, the teenager played five full matches and more than 450 minutes for club and country.
Farke and Rob Price, head of medicine and performance, will need to review Gray upon his return to Thorp Arch, but it would be understandable if they felt it may push the youngster too far if he started on Saturday in Norfolk. It would be a shame to see Farke denied the chance to try Gray at right-back again in the next match.
The combination of him at full-back with Glen Kamara and Ethan Ampadu in midfield worked so well against Bristol City. However, the German may have to revert to Luke Ayling, who has spent the past week working at the training ground, in his natural role.
