Joel Piroe was substituted well before the end of Leeds United's tight win over Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday night and raised more questions about his suitability to the attacking midfielder role he has been given
If Leeds United are winning and one of Georginio Rutter or Joel Piroe are among the goals, Daniel Farke has no concerns with their partnership in attack. The latter has been deployed as an attacking midfielder as opposed to the striker role many had anticipated after his Swansea City transfer, but he struggled to make an impression on Wednesday night.
Questions about the wisdom of playing Piroe behind Rutter continue to linger, despite their shared success against Millwall and Watford last month. The former made his name in England as Swansea’s number nine with a regular flow of goals in the Championship.“If we win games and they’re both involved in goals, everything is okay,” said Farke. “To be already there with four goals for Joel is really good, after just a few games, seven games for him and four goals.
The manager acknowledges this season will not be a perfect science for his forwards and they cannot both always be eight or nine-out-of-10 performers. Piroe, Farke admits, was off it in midweek, but could just as easily fly out of the traps on Saturday with only 65 minutes in the tank after Wednesday.
“Joel didn’t have his best day today, let’s be honest, but he is still unbelievably important for us and I’m also pleased I could save him a few minutes in the end, to bring a quality player like Patrick Bamford on because the next game is coming soon. He has just played 60 or 65 minutes, he’s saved some energy for the next game.”
