Phillip Gore, who owns Lower Newton farm in Shropshire, was sentenced at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court as he failed to obtain consent to flatten the 30-foot dovecote.

A farmer has been told to pay £45,000 for taking a wrecking ball to a Grade II listed dovecote on his land without permission.

Chris Schofield, the cabinet member for planning and regulatory services at Shropshire Council said: 'This was one of the worst examples of deliberate damage and destruction to a listed building seen in the county in recent decades'. The 30-foot dovecote was believed to be the last of an ancient moated farmstead that once existed on Lower Newton Farm in Shropshire
