Tony Martin shot dead a teenage intruder at his home in 1999 and was later jailed for murder

Tony Martin, the Norfolk man who was convicted for shooting a teenage intruder dead at his home in 1999, has died. Martin, 80, was imprisoned in 2000 following the killing of 16-year-old Fred Barras and injuring 29-year-old Brendan Fearon.

The duo had broken into his isolated Emneth Hungate property near Wisbech, Norfolk, on the night of August 20, 1999, intending to rob the place - which Martin used for storing antiques. However, they were shot by then-55-year-old Martin with a pump-action shotgun. Young Fred's body was discovered in the undergrowth around the property the next day, while Mr Fearon managed to crawl to a nearby house and call for help. In April 2000, Martin was found guilty of murder by a jury at Norwich Crown Court, but his conviction was later downgraded to manslaughter after an appeal in 2001.

He returned to his Norfolk farm two years later. Although his time in prison was short, his actions sparked a long-lasting debate about what is considered appropriate force when dealing with home intruders, reports the Mirror.
