Illegal release of lynx in Scotland sparks outrage among farmers, who demand justice and stricter measures against those who bypass legal processes to reintroduce species.
Angry farmers are demanding harsh penalties for people illegally releasing animals into the wild after four lynx were found abandoned in the Cairngorms National Park last week. The animals were later recaptured, but one lynx tragically died from starvation. The surviving three are now being cared for at Edinburgh Zoo. The National Farmers Union of Scotland (NFU Scotland ) issued a statement criticizing the incident, saying its members had long predicted something like this would happen.
They pointed to past illegal releases of beavers in Scotland, where the responsible parties were never found. NFU Scotland President Martin Kennedy wrote a letter to Scotland's SNP ministers calling for a full investigation and for the individuals responsible to be held accountable. He emphasized that the illegal release of species onto rural land is a wildlife crime and those who commit it must face justice. Kennedy also highlighted the 2006 case of illegal beaver releases in Tayside, where the perpetrators were never identified, and how this lack of consequences has emboldened similar actions in England. He argues that the lack of consequences for the Tayside beaver releases has created a dangerous precedent, leading to more 'beaver bombings' and encouraging further unlawful animal releases. The NFU Scotland believes that this situation reflects a growing trend of environmental activists bypassing legal processes to push their rewilding agendas. Some rewilding advocates argue that introducing lynx back into Scotland, where they were wiped out centuries ago, could benefit the environment by controlling the population of overgrazing deer. However, farmers remain deeply worried about the potential damage these reintroduced predators could cause to their livelihoods and livestock
