A 39-year-old father has been found not guilty of manslaughter after fatally striking his three-year-old son with a defective telehandler on a farm.
A 39-year-old father, Neil Speakman, has been acquitted of gross negligence manslaughter following an incident in which he fatally struck his three-year-old son, Albie Speakman, with a defective farm vehicle. The tragic accident occurred on July 16, 2022, in the yard of a farmhouse on Bentley Hall Road in Walshaw, Bury. Moments before the collision, Speakman had left Albie playing with their two pet dogs.
While Speakman had prior experience operating the Kramer telehandler, he lacked formal training. The vehicle was found to have several defects, including a missing wing mirror. During the trial at Minshull Street Crown Court, the prosecution argued that Albie's death resulted from Speakman's negligence, which created a substantial and evident risk of death. They emphasized the telehandler's defects, stating they would have hampered safe operation, making it foreseeable that individuals in the vehicle's vicinity could be injured or killed. A subsequent health and safety inspection corroborated these concerns, concluding that the vehicle's numerous defects posed a severe danger.However, on Tuesday, February 4, the jury delivered a not guilty verdict, clearing Speakman of the charges. This case highlights the tragic consequences of operating machinery without proper training and the importance of maintaining vehicles in safe working condition
