DJ Ferguson, a 31-year-old father of two with a third on the way, had been at the front of the line to receive a heart transplant after being diagnosed with arrhythmia four years ago. He suffered heart failure this winter and was admitted to Brigham and Women’s hospital, where he was later told he was no longer eligible because of his vaccination status.
‘For the foreseeable future, he won’t be able to shower, he won’t be able to swim. He won’t be able to have a life,’ DJ’s father, David Ferguson, toldHis parents, Tracey and David, say their son does not oppose vaccines — but is worried the shot would further complicate his heart condition. Nationally, both surgeons and transplant associations recommend the coronavirus vaccination to transplant patients. The shot is one of several required in order to ensure a successful operation, especially since the patient’s immune system can become compromised following a transplant, most doctor’s feel the inoculation against the virus is imperative before operating.
The Covid-19 shot is just one of several vaccinations transplant patients at Brigham and Women’s hospital need to receive surgery, a spokesperson said.
