Sonya Massey was fatally shot and killed in her Springfield, Illinois, home by a sheriff's deputy.
This incident occurred after midnight on July 6, after Massey had called 911 to report a possible prowler around her home.
“They’re talking about a deputy-involved shooting ... and we just came to realize that the intruder that she had called about had not killed her but a deputy had killed her," Wilburn said. "And that was just unbelievable. I couldn’t understand why, why would a deputy kill my child?” She does so, but Wilburn says it is very difficult for him to watch his daughter apologize and still get shot when she did what she was told.
Wilburn says the force taken against his daughter was too extreme for the situation, and that if the deputy truly felt like he was in danger, he should have used other means to de-escalate the situation than using a gun as the first option.
