Israel has ordered some Palestinians to evacuate areas of eastern Rafah before a 'limited scope' operation against 'terrorist organisations'

Israel has ordered some Palestinians to evacuate areas of eastern Rafah before a 'limited scope' operation against 'terrorist organisations'On Monday, the Israeli government said the Israel Defence Forces would conduct operations in specific areas of the city after some 100,000 Palestinians were told to leave as part of a “limited scope” operation.

Residents said Israel had carried out airstrikes hours after the warnings, with the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV saying Israel had targeted eastern areas of the city near neighbourhoods given evacuation orders. Israel said it had attacked Rafah in a counter-strike on Sunday after the Palestinian militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on a military base near the Kerem Shalom crossing that killed four Israeli soldiers. The crossing is one of the main points used to deliver aid into Gaza. The IDF said 10 rockets had been fired from a site 350m from a civilian shelter in Rafah, and Israel had struck the launcher and a nearby military structure in response.

However, on Friday the Biden administration said there would be consequences for Israel only if it failed to provide a credible plan to safeguard civilians. “Absent of such a plan, we can’t support a major military operation going into Rafah because the damage it would do is beyond what’s acceptable,” the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said.

Displaced Palestinians who left with their belongings from Rafah following an evacuation order by the Israeli army, arrive in Khan Yunis : “Netanyahu has never been interested in a ceasefire. The consensus among liberal Israelis is that Netanyahu is prolonging the war for his own reasons, for self-interest and to stay in power.”
