A commercial airliner takes off from Beirut International Airport as smoke rises above buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs following an Israeli strike The third flight chartered by the UK government in as many days carried British citizens out of Beirut on Friday afternoon as the conflict continued to rage.
However that would still pose a dangerous journey for British nationals to get to the port area if Israel’s bombardment of the Lebanese capital escalated. British citizens who have registered with the UK embassy have been sent text messages telling them to book seats on the flights. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reissued his appeal for Britons to leave Lebanon. He said: “I repeat importantly to UK nationals in Lebanon that now is the time to leave, now is the time to take up that evacuation plan.“That is a really important message … to everybody listening who may be in that position. Now is the time to leave, we have got the plans in place.”
