A peer has warned a 'Notre Dame inferno' could be lying in wait for the Parliament after it was revealed 45 fire have happened since 2014.
Fire threatens one of the UK’s most iconic buildings A ‘Notre Dame inferno’ could be lying in wait for the home of British democracy, a peer has warned, as statistics on fires at the Houses of Parliament were revealed. In the decade between 2014 and 2024, 45 small blazes broke out in the Palace of Westminster. Lord Hain, who served in several cabinet posts under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, said he was ‘horrified’ by the figure.
‘Hallways that should be wide enough for three people to walk along side by side are so narrow, it can feel claustrophobic going in single file.’ The basement is likely to be one of the focal points for any restoration works that take place – and the state of it demonstrates the scale of the task ahead. It’s not the first time Notre Dame – which reopened last month after five years of work costing around £740 million – has been invoked in relation to the fate of the Houses of Parliament.
